Roche’ plays with a wide base when he is forced to take on blockers in run defense, and doesn’t give up ground easily. He typically mixes long-arm, club-rip, and arm-over moves, and is able to uncoil his hips and convert speed to power as well. Roche is a solid technician as a pass rusher, using his hands well to keep himself clean and blockers from being able to lock in their blocks. He has good lower body flexibility, with a tight, compact stance as a down lineman and showing good fluidity and bend around the edge as a pass rusher. Roche times his rushes well, anticipating the snap of the ball to maximize his first step, as well as showing good judgement when shooting gaps as a run defender. He also plays from both the left and right side of the defensive front and appears comfortable in all alignments. Roche aligns as both a defensive end - playing from a three-point stance - as well as a rush linebacker from a two-point stance. Miami’s Quincy Roche is an experienced, athletic, and versatile edge defender who could fit in a variety of schemes at the NFL level. The Giants might not be able to find a pass rusher at the top of the draft, but could they target Roche later on? But the Giants also struggled to get off the field when their coverage wasn’t holding up for 5 seconds. The Giants’ pass rush was largely a function of their pass coverage - they were able to pressure and sack quarterbacks when they held the ball, or Patrick Graham was able to scheme a free rusher. ![]() The New York Giants were able to generate pressure on opposing passers in 2020, but the state of their pass rush isn’t as simple as their sack totals. At points during the week, Roche was seemingly everywhere, blowing up both running and passing plays. Over those days he was a consistent presence in the backfield on both one-on-one drills and in team periods. Miami’s Quincy Roche - who transferred to Miami from Temple for the 2020 season - distinguished himself during the week of Senior Bowl practices. Instead there is a whole pack of EDGE players with their own strengths and weaknesses, each trying to set himself apart from the others. While there are players reckoned to be at the top of the draft board for pass rushers, there isn’t a single dominant player setting the pace for the field. There were several instances where it appears they had found a needle in the haystack, but Roche was limited based on the rotation.Īlthough his role isn’t likely to increase in 2022, Roche does present a quality rotational option with some upside. The 2021 NFL Draft is an interesting one for pass rushers. Roche, who was a sixth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021, did flash at times with the Giants. Roche won’t see a significant increase in his snap count behind Ojulari and the rookie, though he can add another layer to Big Blue’s pass rush in a rotational role. The latter started in the absence of the former and logged 13 tackles, two for loss, three quarterback hits and a sack in that short stretch.ĭespite Carter’s return, Roche still occasionally made impact plays at or behind the line of scrimmage and finished the campaign with 38 tackles, five for loss, 2.5 sacks and seven pressures while on the field for 42 percent of the defensive snaps.Ĭarter signed with the Atlanta Falcons, but the Giants selected Kayvon Thibodeaux with the No. Outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter missed three games between Weeks 8 and 11, and Roche took advantage of an expanded workload on the edge. ![]() But we shouldn’t overlook Quincy Roche, whom the team claimed off waivers before the start of the previous season. Rather, it was Quincy Roche.Ĭlearly, the New York Giants hit on their 2021 second-round pick in Azeez Ojulari, who led the team in sacks (eight) and pressures (27) last year. ![]() But it wasn’t Williams, Ojulari or Thibodeaux who drew the nod. And even some hidden gems.īleacher Report’s Maurice Moton recently broke down the best-kept secrets on every NFL roster and when it came to the Giants, he tabbed a pass rusher. Then, of course, there was the addition of Kayvon Thibodeaux in the 2022 NFL draft just last month.Įven with the departure of Lorenzo Carter, who came on strong to end last season, there seems to be some promise. Leonard Williams has recorded 18.0 sacks over the past two seasons, while 2021 second-round pick Azeez Ojulari set the franchise rookie record for sacks (8.0) a year ago. However, they have showed some signs of finally breaking out of their slump. ![]() The New York Giants have been lacking in the pass rush department since Jason Pierre-Paul was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018.
